Solar Powered air conditioners
At best when an air conditioner first turns on there is a 400%-500% spike in the normal load. There are many gimics that store AC electric power just for the spike during start up. Slow start condensers hurt the electric motors over time. So there is no silver bullet to solve this problem. Now there are other ways to air condition areas we live in. Geo Thermal (very low power consumption less than 40 watts per hour) there is also the solar photovoltaic AC type systems. Here is the problem. Every time you go to run a motor you need a lot of electric power just for the start up of the motors. The solution is to replace all the AC motors with DC motors. Now you don't need to loose electric power because of an inverter. To me this is not the best answer. Second. The spike during start up. In a off grid world you need batteries. Not the expensive deep cell batteries but good reliable batteries. These batteries can handle the spike loads during start up. This is only half the problem.
The rest is how much load over time to power a air conditioner. Another math problem to solve. Well by the time you figure out your normal electric loads and the spike loads you are going to need a lot of solar panels. This is not practical thinking. The goal is to reduce the electric loads not by just adding solar panels. This is a trap I see all the time. The best answer is to remove the big power air conditioner and install a geo thermal heating and cooling system. Now you only need a small amount of batteries and maybe one or two 100 watt solar panels. This is a lot better than trying to install a army of solar panels. Most geo thermal systems use at most 40 watts per hour. There is no environmental or energy cost savings by trying to run a AC air conditioner with solar panels. It cost way too much.
The only solution to air conditioner power is the designs today are all analog. The only practical solution is to use solid state designs. No compressor or fractional HP AC motors. The design should consider both AC and DC power. Every time you produce DC power to DC power you never loose energy. But when you produce DC power and invert that power to AC you always loose energy. Here in the USA we have two main types of Air conditioners. Swamp coolers and condenser humidity units. The swamp coolers are use in hot dry areas. The other units are used a lot here in Florida as a example. Hot wet areas. Now to power these units. There is really no cheap way to take anything off grid using solar, wind or hydro. But there is a way to store DC electric power in a cost effective manner.
But the use of power inverters will drain the storage system without reloading the energy the system is doomed to fail. You really can not get something for nothing. But when it comes to electric power, there are ways to generate electric power for free. We all have hearts (blood pumps) how do we keep the heart pumping. We feed it energy. Nothing can be created. We can only produce energy and convert this energy into a working system. Some day the grid will be history as we know it today. We can not have energy independence or a sustainable future by using a system that was developed over 100 years ago. We have outgrown the grid. We will always need fuels for the world's transportation need. But we need coal like we need health problems. Someone once told me that burning coal is like burning money.
