Question the new micro inverters
As far as I know they are only one phase units. Who has that? Almost every home in the United States is poly phase and industrial applications along with commercial application are three phase. So what is hot about a new product that can not do the job? Big deal they have a USB port for data reporting. You can get the same data from a reversing meter. Each micro inverter is connected to one solar panel. Is that really cost effective and reliable? Just think about that. All DC to AC inverters use electric power to operate. How come they still use analog technology and not solid state technology. How is that a break thru? 20% more improvement in price? If you have a 200 watt solar panel the micro inverter will cost you $300.00. Now if you have 10 solar panels you need 10 micro inverters.
Now you have done nothing but spent more money. Yes it will cost you $3,000.00 for micro inverters for 2,000 watts. The going cost for a inverter is near $.31 to $.35 cents a watt. So at the most a 2000 watt inverter should cost $700.00 and not $3,000.00. Is that a improvement in price? There is not one inverter today that can match the warranty of a solar panel. As a mater of fact no other product has a longer warranty over a solar panel. Why? Because this is the only way to prove solar photovoltaic is the most reliable and long lasting product. All inverters use electric power to change from DC to AC power. There is a better solution. Thomas Edison wanted this type of electric power but Westinghouse and Tessla gave us what we have today. We use every day products that use electric power yet we don't use inverters. Cell phones are a good example. Cars, boats, trucks, plains are another good example. Just look at the photo I posted to the top lest of this comment. Yes. If Thomas Edison got his way we would not have a grid as we know it today. We really don't need wires to travel long distances. We can produce electric power where it is used and needed. I guess we should not trust everything we read or hear. Only trust what you know.

Your point about the cost of micro inverters is generally true. Though an interesting idea, we shouldn’t have to move towards total DC distribution just yet. DC transmission wasn't cost effective in the days of Edison, Tesla; that’s why we have AC systems. Distributed generation wasn’t available/cost effective in those days so they invented long distance AC transmission and it remains today. Eventually, innovation and production volumes would drive cost down like in the case of compact fluorescent lamps and LED lamp drivers which are individually integrated with AC/DC power converters, cell phone/laptop battery chargers and numerous other low cost electronic gadgets in the house.
