One cannot specifically mention a single path. All of the criteria mentioned come into picture while deciding a choice. Inverter price can never be the first because inverter quality and price are in the opposite side. Inverter installers/consultants have to take initiatives to popularize solar harvesting. They must educate the inverter manufacturers about the positive and negative sides of various options. They must work to create maximum number of grid connected systems. For fruitful results the governments have to promulgate solar policy incorporating grid connection in the policy. Give freedom to consumers the choice for choosing the method -grid connected or independent.

My top answer is the Inverter Price, followed closely by robustness/quality. When we talk about household-level PV, we are often talking about customers who aren't necessarily tech savvy. Also, when we are talking about household-level customers, mostly we are talking about Inverters with battery bank capability. So knowledge about efficiency is out of the window. Switching between different power sources can be easily achieved by existing cheap alternatives and don't necessarily need to be integrated into the Inverter, making the Inverter expensive. Also, this might not be a good idea in case such cheap inverters kink off and the household is left with neither solar nor grid!

But, one point which will go farther than any other is after sales service. These cheaper inverters will have a relatively higher failure rate compared to the expensive inverters.
