If central inverters fail
Tags: Central inverter
We have had two central inverters fail within the warranty period. I forget how SMA handled the warranty, as it was before I joined my current company. However, Fronius would only offer phone support to our technician on site, and then would only sent us the parts that they thought were bad, and we had to go out a second time and figure it out ourselves. Ouch... luckily, in this case, it was just swapping a circuit card. Recently, however, I have had TWO phone calls of homeowners desperate for someone to help them. Both had SMA2500U inverters, installed by two different companies that were no longer in business, and both just barely outside the 5 year warranty period. I think one was 7 years and one was 8 years... One customer was on their 8th phone call to different installers, and no one would offer to even come out and diagnose what the issue might be without a substantial 'service call out fee', and then were quoting $3000-$5000 to install new inverters.
Luckily, I was able to refer them to an electrician that I knew, and they were able to replace their inverters with reconditioned ones for a reasonable price. However, the reconditioned SMA2500U inverters only had an additional 1 year warranty. Will they be in the same position 2-3 years from now? Ouch! And yes, I understand that a homeowner may have problems getting someone to replace a failed micro that might be in the middle of an array. But at least you know exactly what is wrong through the free lifetime panel level monitoring, and the micro inverters are warrantied for 25 years instead of 10...
