Cost of Solar PV for 1MW plant
Cost of Solar PV is now Lowest at $1/Watt peak which means $1000,000/MW only for solar PV it has to be mounted and to improve out pot you might have to have tracking etc all this will increase the cost to be double. It has to be connected to the grid with transmission lines and inverters etc. All this will add costs. This price of Solar cells is from QS Solar of China, FOB China. Cost of Solar panels in India are very much higher nearly $4/Wp. Prices are coming down.. If you use concentrated solar PV you can save on space required.
But cost is not the only input to be considered for Solar Energy. This is a bit of a complex situation, according to my research.
The numbers don't make sense if you consider Material Cost + Labor Cost. If you now add Rebates from the Federal Govt + State Govt + depreciation, then they start making sense.
Do they make sense all over the world? No. It makes a lot of sense in Hawaii or for someone who is thinking for his yatch because the current rate of purchase is quite high. Not for someone in China yet.
Thumb rule is still the same, $1Million for 1MW, used to $1.25Million for 1MW.
Another big challenge is will your customer pay for power? Once you spend $2million, you are now going to make let's say $20K per month. At that point your customer could say, I only want to pay $15K or else forget it. He has a plan B, to buy it from the Utilities at a higher cost. You don't. That arm twisting is another big challenge, especially in the developing world, like China.
These are my observations, we are in the process of installing 4 Solar Panel based projects in the 100KW range in California and the numbers make absolute sense.
